1/18/2007: 2007 IFPAA Senior Softball League Newsletter Welcome to Senior Slow Pitch Softball! Senior softball is for girls who were 16, 17 or 18 years old as of December 31, 2006. We welcome back old friends -- our 17 and 18 year old veteran players who played Senior League softball last year -- and extend a hearty greeting to our new players. Some of our new players will be moving up from IFPAA Pony League play last year. If you are in that group, you will find that the Senior League is very similar to your Pony League experience. If you have not played much softball, or have been away from softball for a while, you will also find Senior League softball to be a great experience – a chance to reunite with old friends and make new friends while engaging in good-natured competition on the field. Senior Softball League: IFPAA Senior League teams are drafted by their managers from the pool of registered players – every player who has registered by March 1, 2007 is guaranteed a spot on a team! -- and play in the Greater Pittsburgh Girls Softball League. This allows them to compete “in-house” against other IFPAA teams and also travel to play against opponents from other areas such as Zelienople and Pine Richland. Primary sites for IFPAA Senior League home games, and for away games against other IFPAA teams, will be Blueberry Hill Park and Devlin Field. In the last week or two of the regular season, the IFPAA Senior League will hold “in-house” playoffs to determine IFPAA “bragging rights” for the rest of the year. There will also be an IFPAA Senior League All Star game near the end of the season and possibly an additional All Star game between current IFPAA Senior League stars and alumni stars from past years. Following the regular season, qualifying IFPAA Senior League teams will compete in city-wide post season playoffs. Another post season highlight is the city-wide Fourth of July All Star Game featuring two players from each IFPAA Senior League team. In addition, we plan to field a Senior League tournament team to compete in local tournaments. Tryouts: Tryouts (to allow evaluation of players for the draft) will be held in early March. We will contact registered players by email; you can also check our website , www.ifpaa.org, for more details as March approaches. How Parents Can Help: We need parental involvement to have a successful season. There are many opportunities to be involved: we need Managers and Coaches as well as help with fields, supplies, equipment, the IFPAA Challenger 5K Race, Festival in the Park, and Snack Shack coverage, among many others. Please sign up for a volunteer position on the Volunteer Sign-Up Sheet at Registration or by visiting www.ifpaa.org and clicking where indicated. Umpires: Any Senior girls (ages 16-18) who are interested in umpiring Minor League (ages 9-10) softball games FOR PAY should sign up on the Umpire Sign-Up Sheet at Registration or email me (see below). Senior Softball: having fun; making new friends; and playing softball. It should be a great season! Richard McCoy, Senior Softball Commissioner, Email: RTMcCoy@aol.com (Please put the word “Softball” on the message or “re:” line of any email to me, so that I know it is not spam).
